Medications are tools utilized to help reduce the intensity and occurrence of symptoms associated with varied mental health conditions. Medications may not entirely vanquish symptoms altogether, but for many, medications provide a level of relief that may significantly improve quality of life. When appropriately used, medications in combination with therapy and other therapeutic methods can provide an effective approach to treating mental health conditions.
Medications influence brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. Most of us have heard or read about serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and norepinephrine to name a few. These neurochemicals are important determinants of mental health and cognitive functioning as they influence our general mood, ability to relax, focus and concentration, and feelings of well-being. Medications attempt to balance neurotransmitters in ways that support emotional health.
