Transform Your Mental Health Journey

Transform Your Mental Health JourneyTransform Your Mental Health Journey

Functional Care and Services

You are more than a psychiatric diagnosis. The functional approach to psychiatry honors that principle by evaluating the complete clinical picture of who you are as an individual. Mental health challenges do not exist in a vacuum and are often a physiological signal that body systems are out of balance. Functional psychiatry is rooted in a clinical partnership that takes a shared decision-making approach. Time is taken to listen to your comprehensive history and utilize laboratory testing to investigate the underlying root causes of mental health conditions. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or cognitive dysfunction, I will work collaboratively with you to develop a customized treatment plan that integrates evidence-based that may include conventional medicine with targeted nutritional and lifestyle interventions. The goal is to not only alleviate symptoms but to explore underlying biological imbalances.

Comprehensive Assessment & Diagnostics

  • In-depth Initial Consultation (90-120 minutes) to gather detailed medical, nutritional, and lifestyle history
  • Broad Laboratory Testing (to identify root cause imbalances)
    • Micronutrient deficiency testing (vitamins, minerals, amino acids)
    • Comprehensive stool analysis (gut microbiome health)
    • Food sensitivity and allergy testing
    • Hormone panel (cortisol, thyroid)
    • Organic acids testing (metabolic function)
    • Genetic testing (e.g., MTHFR, COMT variants)
  • Review of outside records and previous lab work

Target Areas

  • ADHD
  • Anxiety Conditions
  • Depression and Mood Conditions
  • Emotional Dysregulation and Explosiveness
  • Sleep Difficulties
  • Stress Reduction
  • Substance Use Support:  (Note: This service does not include treatment for acute withdrawal or detox needs. If your situation requires a higher level of care, appropriate referrals will be made to ensure you receive the necessary support.)

Integrative Psychotherapy Approaches:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):  The cognitive model asserts situations we experience are actually less important than the characteristics of our thoughts and perceptions of those situational experiences. The nature of automatic thoughts and perceptions have greater influence on our mood, anxiety and associated physical states. The cognitive model is an evidenced based approach using cognitive reframing strategies shown to be effective in helping us manage emotions, feelings, behaviors, and physical experiences. At White Hart PMH, CBT is used to target depression, anxiety, and ADHD symptoms.

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI): MI is an evidence-based method that utilizes the Transtheoretical Model of Change and talk therapy focused on motivations and ambivalence for change. It is often used to explore and meet desired goals associated with substance use issues including alcohol, nicotine, THC, and additional substances of choice which may be hindering functionality in social, professional, and other areas of life. The most important aspect of MI is that the process if primarily driven by the goals and hopes of the client.

  •  Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): The dialectical model asserts that psychological distress often arises from difficulty regulating intense emotional responses, particularly in interpersonal contexts. The nature of emotional dysregulation can lead to reactive behaviors, unstable relationships, and significant internal turmoil. The dialectical model is an evidence-based approach using skills-based strategies shown to be effective in helping us build capacity for mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. At White Hart PMH, DBT is used to target treatment-resistant mood and anxiety disorders.

  • Talk Therapy: Treatment goals are set collaboratively between the provider and client. While these goals help guide discussions and progress, the approach remains flexible and client-led, allowing for open exploration. Clients may experience emotional release (catharsis), gain insight into their feelings, and develop problem-solving skills. Throughout therapy, the provider may offer observations on the client’s thoughts, beliefs, and personal narratives to foster self-awareness and growth.

Other Integrated Care Approaches:

  • Acudetox 5-point Ear Acupuncture:  This complementary treatment is offered free of charge to clients with a history of substance use. Acudetox may help reduce cravings, stabilize mood, ease anxiety, promote relaxation, and improve sleep disturbances related to both acute and prolonged withdrawal.

  • Health and Wellness Planning:  Improved mental health and wellness require a focus on multiple dimensions of health, physiologic, psychologic, and healthy lifestyle. Designing a sustainable health and wellness plan focuses on the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: activity, nutrition, sleep, stress resilience, social connections, and avoidance of risky substances.

  • Meditation Instruction: Meditation is a simple yet powerful tool to regain inner calm, especially when stress leaves you feeling anxious, tense, or overwhelmed. Whether you're new to meditation or have tried it before with limited success, there’s a method that can work for you—even if you struggle with finding time, restless thoughts, or focus. Various techniques can help overcome common challenges, and meditation can be adapted to fit different settings and activities. You can practice it while walking, waiting, running, or even during a workout, making it a flexible part of your daily life.

A Functional Approach to ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is far more complex than a simple inability to focus. While the conventional model often focuses on managing symptoms with stimulant medications alone, a functional psychiatric approach seeks to answer a deeper question: What is driving these symptoms?

The functional model views ADHD not as an isolated deficit of attention, but as a manifestation of underlying physiological variances that affect brain function, energy regulation, and neural connectivity. By investigating the root causes, a more comprehensive and personalized treatment plan that addresses the whole person, not just the diagnosis can be developed.

Root Causes to Investigate

Functional psychiatry recognizes that ADHD symptoms can be influenced or exacerbated by a variety of biological factors. Through comprehensive assessment and targeted laboratory testing, the approach evaluates for:

  • Neurotransmitter Imbalances: Assessing levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which are critical for focus, motivation, and mood regulation.
  • Micronutrient Deficiencies: Identifying low levels of specific vitamins and minerals essential for cognitive function, such as iron, zinc, magnesium, and vitamin D.
  • Blood Sugar Dysregulation: Evaluating how fluctuations in glucose levels can impact energy, concentration, and emotional stability throughout the day.
  • Gut-Brain Axis Health: Utilizing comprehensive stool analysis to assess the gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in neurotransmitter production and systemic inflammation.
  • Genetic Variants: Reviewing genetic markers (such as MTHFR, COMT, and DRD4) that can influence methylation, dopamine metabolism, and medication response.
  • Food Sensitivities and Allergies: Identifying inflammatory responses to certain foods that may contribute to brain fog and cognitive dysfunction.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Evaluating thyroid function and adrenal health (cortisol patterns), as these can significantly impact energy, focus, and stress resilience.

A Personalized Treatment Plan

Once the underlying contributors are identified, an individualized treatment plan can be deverled that may integrate:

  • Targeted Nutritional Support: Personalized supplementation protocols to correct specific deficiencies and support optimal neurotransmitter function.
  • Dietary Interventions: Guidance on anti-inflammatory diets, elimination protocols, and blood sugar stabilization strategies to support sustained mental energy.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Sleep optimization, exercise prescriptions tailored to support dopamine regulation, and stress management techniques to improve resilience.
  • Strategic Medication Management: When medication is appropriate, the goal is to use the lowest effective dose, often in combination with foundational physiological support to enhance efficacy and minimize side effects.

The goal of functional psychiatric care for ADHD is not simply to mask symptoms, but to correct the underlying imbalances that impede focus, organization, and emotional regulation. By restoring physiological balance, we aim to help you achieve lasting clarity, improved executive function, and a greater sense of control over your daily life.
